Well, I've become a real slacker in the world of blogging, and didn't think it really made a difference until two weeks ago when my college buddy Rob called on my birthday and harrassed me for not having any new posts. This re-invigorated my desire to blog, and even though the busy-ness of life has kept me from actually putting fingers to the keyboard for weeks on end, this post is dedicated to Rob, as he might be the only one who actually reads it! :)
The randomness of life...
It's been funny to me lately how many of my friends have pointed out to me that my life is not exactly normal. Not that it's extremely strange or peculiar, but simply that small random things come up here and there and my life follows them in what could arguably be a directionless path. This could potentially be discouraging for me, except for the fact that I believe in the sovereignty of a God who loves me and directs my path. So, instead, I view this all as very fun and comical as I daily await what surprises could be around the next corner. And believe me, there have been many of them lately!
Birthdays in Detroit...
The latest leg of my journey can be traced back to my birthday two weeks ago. Still being here in North Carolina without a job, but with a free flight to anywhere Southwest flies burning a hole in my pocket, I decided to fly to Detroit for my birthday weekend. Detroit? Yes, I know, it sounds just as strange to me as it does to you. Detroit ranks right up there with Siberia on a list of places that I want to see someday. But Detroit is where Barak and his brother Willie have moved for a few months to work on a house(they literally live just blocks from Eminem's infamous 8 Mile Rd!) , and so Detroit is where I flew so that Barak and I could celebrate our birthdays together. We kept laughing at the fact that we never would have imagined we'd be celebrating our birthdays in Detroit! But it was a fun (and freezing) weekend, and well worth the trip. (As a funny side note - I discovered that cold weather and sensor toilets do not go well together. In the airport on the way to Detroit, I actually had a toilet flush 5 times while I tried to take off my scarf, mittens, jacket, etc.)
A new job...
While I was waiting in the airport on my birthday I got a call from a placement agency with an offer for a job, which I accepted. As with everything else in my life, it didn't quite make sense how this all came together, but out of the blue a few weeks ago, I received a call from a placement agency that had seen my resume online at monster.com. They had a job they thought I would be good for, I wasn't interested, but decided to go in and meet with them regarding another position. With moving out here, I wanted a job that was close to where my sister lives, part-time to full-time with flexible hours, and a low level of commitment so that I wouldn't feel guilty when I move back to L.A. However, one thing led to another and before I knew it, I'd landed a full-time, commuting position as an Executive Assistant in the 4th largest commercial construction firm in the U.S....nothing that I'd set out to do, but it came down to the fact that the opportunity fell in my lap and if I don't at least give it a shot, I'll never know. So, that's right. I'm a working woman once again! I flew back from Detroit late on a Monday night, started work first thing Tuesday morning, and have been going non-stop ever since then. Which is probably why I landed flat in bed, sick as a dog all weekend long!
Sick sucks...
There's something nasty going around and I caught it! And let me tell you...you don't want to catch it! I've had every symptom from a persistent sore throat and pressure all throughout my head to the chills and nausea for the past several days. Not to be gross, but I think I've coughed up every color of the rainbow and still don't feel like I'm getting much better! I've literally done nothing but sleep for the past several days. Even typing this blog entry has required my greatest outburst of energy all weekend long. So, yeah...being sick really sucks and I really hope none of you get whatever is going around. If you do, call me because I can empathize!
Okay, I'm petering out now. Time for another dose of Theraflu or DayQuil or Airborne or whatever seems most appealing at the moment and then another long nap. Hopefully I'm better enough to go to work tomorrow because I'll feel pretty lame calling in sick during my third week of work! I'll keep you posted...
